Brief
When designing the PlayStation 5, we wanted to empower players to augment their gaming with powerful multimedia experiences, including the ability to watch video content as you play games. With this Universal Video Player, our first-party video experiences would have unified inputs and could be transported across applications in a number of multitasking configurations.
This project involved coordination across nearly every team at PlayStation during PS5 development to consider player needs and partner requirements across the different experiences. Working as the Lead Designer for the Media UX team, I unified this design across the entire PS5 platform by establishing common input methods, providing design templates and sticker sheets and workshopping the UX with various teams for fullscreen and multitasking configurations.
As a result, seven variations of first party video players on PS4 reduced to just one on PS5, simplifying the PlayStation tech stack and unifying the user experience throughout the system.
